BioBlitz @ Country Parks (2023)

Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department is collaborating with the Outdoor Wildlife Learning Hong Kong (OWLHK) to orgainse the "BioBiltz @ Country Parks" from June to September 2023. This activity promotes the concept of citizen science and encourages students and the public to explore the local wildlife, appreciate the rich biodiversity in country parks and enjoy the fun of nature.

Country Parks “Wild Talk”

Local ecological experts will share their experiences and tips on "exploring wildlife" in the country parks in the online seminars (Talks are delivered in Cantonese. Videos with English subtitles will be uploaded after the talks).

1. BioBlitz and citizen science – Dr. Xoni Ma

Speaker: Dr. Xoni MA
Founder and Education Director, Outdoor Wildlife Learning Hong Kong

Dr. Ma is one of the few local environmental education and ecology researchers, with his research focuses on the utilization of outdoor education for school environmental education, and also terrestrial forest ecology. Dr. Ma has involved in the field of environmental education for many years, with various roles for pushing the development of Hong Kong environmental education from different perspectives.
He is keen on applying his professional knowledge and experiences in community services and he is now being the part-time Lecturer of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Faculty of Education, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. And serving as a member of the Board of Directors of Ocean Park Corporation, Advisory Board for Science Unit of the Lingnan University, and the Endangered Species Advisory Committee of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, etc.


2. Butterflies in Hong Kong Country Parks - Mr. Ling Yuet Fung

Speaker: Mr. Yuet Fung LING
PhD Candidate, School of Biological Sciences, HKU

PhD Candidate in the Area of Ecology and Biodiversity, School of Biological Sciences, HKU. His research uses butterflies and moths as a study system to understand insect physiological and ecological responses under global climate change, and seeks to learn about the migration and overwintering behaviour of danaid butterflies. Before becoming obsessed with butterflies, he majored in Environmental Science and Geography in his Bachelor degree. Beyond research, he actively assisted in local butterfly surveys and nature education, where he has led outdoor field trips and given talks for multiple organisations.


3. Spiders in Hong Kong Country Parks - Mr. Dickson Wong

Speaker: Mr Dickson WONG
Biology Teacher, Ho Koon Nature Education cum Astronomical Centre

Graduated in the Master of Philosophy, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. With over 15 years of experience in outdoor education, Dickson is currently a biology teacher at the Ho Koon Nature Education cum Astronomical Centre. He published "A Guide to the Spiders of Hong Kong" in 2016. In 2017, he created the "Hong Kong Spiders" project on iNaturalist, providing a platform to record the distribution of spiders in Hong Kong. In 2020, he was invited to become a member of the Spider and Scorpion Specialist Group by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Founder, Hong Kong Wetlands Conservation Association
 

Dr Michael Lau is the Founder of the Hong Kong Wetlands Conservation Association. He is now an Adjunct Professor at the School of Biological Sciences, the University of Hong Kong. Previously, he had worked for World Wide Fund for Nature - Hong Kong as the Wetlands Conservation Director and for Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden as the Department Head of the South China Biodiversity Programme.

Michael has wide experience in studying biodiversity – especially the amphibians and reptiles – in Hong Kong, and the South China region, the threats they faced, and, formulating conservation strategy and implementing projects. He is also a member of several IUCN Species Survival Commission specialist groups and has contributed to the Red List assessment of amphibians, reptiles and mammals.


2. Moths in Hong Kong Country Parks - Ms. Cheng Hoi Ling

Founder, Project CROW

Co-founder of Project CROW, a nonprofit organisation focusing on nature education. She is a proud 'moth-er' who shows unabashedly biased love towards the less understood relatives of the butterflies. Upon completing MSc in Environmental Management, Hoiling has promoted the fascinating lives of insects through imagery and storytelling. She is currently dedicated to developing interdisciplinary nature education syllabus for primary schools.


3. Beetles in Hong Kong Country Parks - Mr. Yiu Vor

BioBlitz Experience Day

Country parks provide diverse natural habitats for wildlife. Professional instructors from OWLHK will guide participants to explore the Country Parks and Special Areas in observing the targeted wildlife and develop skills for conducting BioBlitz surveys.

Quota: 40 persons per session (Each person can reserve up to two quotas per session, and each email address can only register once per session. Quotas will be allocated by balloting.)

Note: Participants aged 12 or below must be accompanied by a person aged 18 or above.
Participants under 18 are required to submit the completed “Parent/Guardian Consent Form” before the activity.

BioBlitz @ Country Parks For All

BioBlitz @ Country Parks For All is a self-initiated BioBlitz event that encourages the public to explore and appreciate the biodiversity of Hong Kong country parks. During the event, participants only need to visit four designated country parks and special areas in person, use their mobile phones or cameras to take pictures of wild animals and plants, and upload them to the designated online platform. After completing designated tasks, participants can receive exquisite souvenirs!

BioBlitz Classroom

To encourage secondary school students to actively explore the rich biodiversity of Hong Kong Country Parks and Special Areas, “BioBlitz Classroom” is specifically organised for students to learn about the basic BioBlitz survey skills and the important notes while doing the BioBlitz survey, and also familiarise themselves with the online platform “iNaturalist” for record keeping.

Inter-School BioBlitz Challenge

After mastering the BioBlitz survey skills, students can form teams to represent their schools in the "Inter-School BioBlitz Challenge". On the day of the competition, participants will record different wildlife in specified location and time and complete designated tasks. It is a fun way to explore the nature on your own in the competition.
