Learning objectives:
This programme aims to arouse students' motivation and interest in learning through three areas, which are knowledge, skills, and attitudes. For knowledge, students will learn about the characteristics and life cycles of insects and start thinking about the relationship between insects and the environment. Field activities allow students to get exposure to and conduct inquiry-based learning activities in nature, which can strengthen their learning effectiveness. Moreover, inquiry-based activities related to butterflies can strengthen students’ abilities to observe and identify species in the natural environment, together with helping students to develop generic skills and positive values, such as self-management skills, communication skills, collaboration skills, and positive attitudes in caring for nature.
Ultimately, students are expected to appreciate nature and Hong Kong's historical monuments, thereby raising awareness of environmental protection and conservation.
Relevance to curriculum:
In accordance with General Studies Curriculum Guide for Primary Schools (Primary 1 – Primary 6)
Related Chapter: Strand 2: People and Environment (KS2)
Type of field activity:
Inquiry-based Learning: Butterfly Investigation
During the field activity, students will try to take up different roles for outdoor inquiry learning, namely "Explorer", "Observer", "Recorder" and "Photographer", and pay attention to the presence of butterflies, so as to understand how different environments affect the distribution and number of butterflies. Through collaboration with peers, students are able to get a rich field learning experience. Moreover, students can establish green hiking etiquette by visiting country parks. It is hoped that students will be able to develop an attitude of caring for nature, animals and plants.
