Learning objectives:

This programme aims to arouse students' motivation and interest in learning through three areas, which are knowledge, skills, and attitudes. For knowledge, students will learn concepts related to food chains and be able to create food chains and food webs. Field activities allow students to get exposure to and conduct inquiry-based learning activities in nature, which can strengthen their learning effectiveness. Moreover, inquiry-based activities can strengthen students’ abilities to observe and identify species in the natural environment, together with helping students to develop generic skills and positive values, such as self-management skills, communication skills, collaboration skills, and positive attitudes in caring for nature. Ultimately, students are encouraged to reflect on the interdependent relationship between humanity and nature and raise awareness of protecting the natural environment.

Relevance to curriculum:

In accordance with General Studies Curriculum Guide for Primary Schools (Primary 1 – Primary 6)

Related Chapter: Strand 2: People and Environment (KS2)

Type of field activity:

Inquiry-based Learning: Habitat Exploration and Wildlife Survey

Woodlands, scrubs, ponds etc. can be found in the Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve Outdoor Study Centre. Each habitat has different species inhabiting in it, which is an excellent venue for students to observe. During the field activity, teachers can encourage students to use their sight and hearing to explore the wild environment and pay attention to the living things in Tai Po Kau, such as birds, butterflies or traces of some mammals. Through observation, it is not difficult for students to discover the small organisms on different parts of the plants as well as their habits, which helps students to gain a deeper understanding of the concept of food chain. It is hoped that students will be able to develop an attitude of caring for nature, animals and plants.
